INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

The Journal of the Egyptian Parasitologists United welcomes original scientific research in the field of Parasitology on the condition that the material has not been previously published (except as abstract or preliminary report) or considered for publication elsewhere. To avoid delay authors are requested to follow the guidelines requested. Only papers of good scientific merit will be accepted for publication. The acceptance criteria are the quality and originality of the research and its significance to the readership. Manuscripts are written in English with an Arabic abstract.

Submission

1- All materials (manuscripts of regular papers, short communications, letters to the editor and announcements) should be submitted to the Editor with a covering letter specifying the corresponding author, telephone and e-mail.

2- In keeping with IMRAD format in a multi-authored manuscript a form signed and submitted to specify that they have all participated actively in the study and are in agreement with its contents which have not been published or considered for publication elsewhere (form is provided).

3- Peer reviewing: All manuscripts will be reviewed by two anonymous reviewers who are usually, but not always members of the Editorial Board for their views and recommendation. In depth statistical review will be considered on request of the methodology or disciplinary reviewers. The final decision of acceptance or rejection is made by the Editor. The authors are advised to retain copies of the submitted manuscripts and correspondence as materials cannot be returned.

4- Confirmation of receipt of manuscripts: This is within 1-2 weeks (unless submitted personally), and information as to acceptability is within 4-8 weeks. Authors are advised to submit any revisions requested within two weeks to avoid delay. One set of proofs will be sent to the corresponding author as given on the title page of the manuscript. Only type setter's errors and corrections requested by the reviewers are accepted. No changes in, or additions to the edited manuscript will be allowed.

5- Reprints: On publication the authors will receive one copy each of the issue in which the article appears and the principal author will receive 25 free reprints. Requests for more reprints will be charged.

6- Copyright: Accepted articles become the permanent property of JEPU and may not be wholly or partly reproduced without the written consent of the Editor. Reproduction of illustrations or tables from other publications is the author(s) responsibility.

7- Ethical considerations: Research involving human subjects must include a statement of assurance in the Material and Methods section specifying that an informed consent was obtained from the patients, and that the study protocol was approved by the institution's research review committee. Likewise research involving experimentation on animals must include a similar statement indicating that all animals received humane care and that the study protocol complies with the institution's guidelines.

Language

1-Manuscripts are written in English. Oxford English or Webster's New International Dictionary should be consulted for spelling of English words. Either English or American spelling should be used consistently throughout the manuscript. The Editor and members of Editorial Council reserve the right to make alterations in the style and grammar appropriate for publication in JEPU.

2-Numbers should be written as Arabic numerals except at the beginning of a sentence where they should be written in words.

3-Latin names of parasites and terms such as in vitro, in vivo, et al. should be written in italics. Superscript and subscript may be used.

4-Trade names or abbreviations of chemical names may be used only if initially preceded by their chemical or scientific names, followed by abbreviation in parenthesis.

5-All measurements should be in metric (conventional) units. System international (SI) units may be given in parenthesis.

2- All pages should be numbered consecutively starting with title page as number 1. The title should be short and informative.

3- Manuscripts are re-submitted after reviewing and final correction together with a CD on which the whole article is copied in Microsoft word. Following the text, tables and figure legends are saved as one file.

All illustrations must be scanned and included in the CD and the originals included with the manuscript copies. Label CD with title and last name of corresponding author.

Layout of Manuscripts

According to the IMRAD format the order of appearance of material in all manuscripts should be divided into the following major headings typed in capitals: Title page, Abstract (followed by the key words), Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgment (if any), References, Tables, Figures, Legends of Figures. Subheadings should be indicated by italics without numerical or alphabetical designation.

Title Page

1- Page number 1 of the manuscript should contain only the following: title of article written in capital letters; author(s) name(s) with first name written in full followed by initials for middle name and then the family name, and without titles or degrees; institutional affiliations including city, state and country; a running headline of no more than 40 characters; a name and complete address to which correspondence and reprint requests should be sent; footnotes indicating sources of financial support and changes of address.

2-Superscript Arabic numerals should be used by authors' names and respective institution in order to relate them to each other.

Abstract

1- Page number 2 of the manuscript and should be composed of 200-300 words.

3- Structure is formatted to concisely state the background, objective, design, material and methods, results, conclusions.

4-The abstract should not contain abbreviations or references.

5-Key Words or short phrases, about 3-7 are typed separately (in italics) under the abstract, and should not be taken from the title.

Introduction

This presents a summary of purpose of study and its importance. Only pertinent references of earlier work having direct bearing on the study are mentioned without detailed presentation or discussion.

Material and Methods

1- Sources of materials including address (city and country) should be mentioned and gifted material is acknowledged. Known methods having readily available reference need not be described in detail. Original methods or modifications of established procedures should be described in detail. Date duration and location of study should be specified.

2- Statistical data as means is verified by an index of variation (standard variation ± SD, standard error of the mean ± SE, range). The number of values upon which each mean is based, and the statistical significance (P values) of differences from control values and method of calculation (e.g. Student's t-test) should be indicated. Where appropriate lethality data should be presented as LD50 values.

3- Statistical expressions: express t test as t (in italics), F test as F (in italics), chi square test as χ2 (in Greek), related coefficient as r (in italics), degree of freedom as γ (in Greek), sample number as n (in italics), and probability as P (in italics).

Results

Findings are presented clearly and concisely summarizing only important observations, with reference to tables and figures.

Tables are written each on a separate page and prepared so that they can be printed horizontally. All tables are placed at the end of the manuscript and referred to in the text consecutively in order of appearance in the text by Arabic numbers. Tables will be reproduced by photo-offset directly from the author's typed manuscript whenever possible. Long tables are preferably replaced by graphs. Restriction to following information will minimize errors:

Above the table its number and a clear concise title are centered. Below descriptive information and foot notes referring to data in the table are placed.  Each column should have a heading and units of measurement must be clearly indicated. Whenever possible, all data should be presented as mean values with relevant measure of dispersion (e.g. standard deviation, standard error of the mean, range). Statistical significance of differences from control values should be presented either in the table or in its footnotes. Negative data should not be placed in the table and instead stated in the text concisely and briefly indicating what was done, results obtained (including a measure of variability), how data were analyzed and its significance. Also non-significant figures are to be brought to the nearest digits (e.g. 5.5 ± 0.5 instead of  5.4902 ± 0.478).

Figures should not duplicate material contained in text or table and should be referred to in the text consecutively by Arabic numbers. Each one is drawn clearly on a separate page. All figures are placed at the end of the manuscript and submitted in triplicates. One set of figures should be of high quality (India ink drawn on thick white paper or glossy photographic prints). Related figures may be grouped together to form a plate on one page and given a number with alphabetical subdivisions (e.g. Fig. 1a, Fig. 1b,). To ensure clarity, size of figures should be approximately twice the final size which will appear in JEPU, and no smaller than 10 x 13 cm and no larger than 21 x 28 cm. Points of observations on line graphs should be large enough to be visible after reduction of figure. Letters and numbers should be at least 4 mm in height. Both horizontal and vertical axis must be labeled. Line and bar graphs should show means and indicate a measure of dispersion (standard error of the mean, standard deviation or range) by vertical lines if more than two replicates were performed for each point.

Legends for all figures should be brief, specific and listed on a separate page headed 'Legends of Figures', and should give sufficient experimental information without necessary reference to text. Number of experiments should be indicated in the legend. Statistical significance of the differences from the control values should be shown either in the figure or in the legend beneath the figure. The actual points of observation should be shown if the data is based upon one or two determinations.

Micrographs (optical or electron) or other photographs should have a bar scale directly on the figure rather than terms as x 20,000 since the size when published may be different from that which was submitted. On the back of each micrograph or Figure and along its top edge the number, the author(s) names, and JEPU should be written by soft pencil. Colored plates will be reproduced at the expense of the author.

Discussion

Recapitulation of results should be avoided. Data is discussed in detail highlighting its significance, relationship to data obtained by other researchers and possible reasons for /or significance of differences. Link the conclusion with the goals of the study.

Acknowledgments

Statement of thanks for individual help or advice, for grants or fellowships should be brief and simple.

References

1- Only up dated references and those that have been read and the correctness of the citation verified should be included on a separated paper.

2- References should be numbered consecutively in brackets in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text and listed numerically in the reference list.

3- Names of journals should be abbreviated in the style of MEDLINE.

4- All authors are listed when six or less. When seven or more, the first three are listed and then add et al.

5- All articles in the list of references should be cited in the text and, conversely, all references cited in the text must be presented in the list. References to unpublished data and personal communications should appear in the text only.

Journal of Egyptian Parasitologists United should be cited as JEPU.

Letters to the Editor

Letters are published if judged by the Editor to be of interest. They should be headed "Letter to the Editor" and followed by the title of the communication. Names of authors and affiliation should be at the end of the letter. Letters (only one copy) should not exceed 500 words of text to allow for references and figures. Receipt of letters will not be acknowledged but will be published without proof or sending a note of regret to the authors. Letters commenting on previous articles in the journal are not exposed to peer review; those reporting original observations will be. No reprints will be provided.

Short Communications

The quality of short communications is expected to be as good as that of full articles and are likewise refereed. In form the report has

an abstract of not more than 75 words and is not divided into Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion.  The report should not be more than three double spaced typewritten pages, not including references, tables and figures. Tables and figures should not be more than two of each.

Reviews

In this section, books or articles of interest published elsewhere, may be abstracted. The review article should mention the objectives, sources, methods of selection, compilation and interpretation of data and conclusions.
