Parasitology Curriculum

For Postgraduate Students

A-M.Sc. Degree in Clinical and Chemical pathology

(1) Description of the subjects and reasons for offering the course :

Parasitology is the science which studies organisms that may live inside the human body i.e. infection (worms = helminths and protozoa), or outside the human body i.e. infestation (arthropods). These organisms may cause direct harm to man or transmit pathogens to him.

Thus the aim of this study is to protect man from infection or infestation with parasites by studying :

a-The mode of human infection in order to avoid it (PREVENTION)

b-The manifestations of infection in order to achieve proper DIAGNOSIS and hence TREATMENT.

c-The methods of LABORATORY DIAGNOSIS

d-The life cycle and ecology of the parasite, and the epidemiology of the infection in order to combat the parasite in the community (Control)

B-Other Postgraduate Degrees

1-M.Sc. Basic Sciences (Subsidiary Parasitology)

2-M.Sc. Basic Science - Parasitology

3- M.Sc. Public Health

4- M.Sc. Tropical Medicine & Hygiene

5-Diploma of Tropical Medicine

6-Diploma of Public Health

7-M.D. Degree Parasitology

In addition to Curriculum of Clinical and Chemical Pathology they study the following subjects:

Medical Entomology

I-Insecta :

1-Dipterous flies : Mosquitoes, Phlebotomus, Musca, Stomoxys, Glossina, other blood sucking and myiasis producing flies.

2-Fleas

3-Lice

4-Bugs

For these insects general character of identification is studied and medical importance (transmission of protozoal, bacterial or viral disease)

II-Arachnida : includes ticks and Mites

General character for identification is studied and medical importance (transmission of protozoal viral or bacterial diseases or toxins and mechanical injury.

III-Cyclops acting as intermediate host for some helminthes

Insect control is also studied to avoid insect transmitted diseases as malaria leishmania, typhus, plague and
